On Wednesday, July 29, 2009, the DOLTR hit the road again for a Home Blessing. It had been sometime since our last celebration of a family's homecoming, so the DOLTR staff was very excited. Our road trip took us to Waveland, MS, to the Matherne residence. The Matherne’s home is located just a few blocks from the beach, so the home sustained heavy damage during Hurricane Katrina. When speaking with Mr. Matherne, he commented that the only reason the entire house did not come down during the storm, was because of a few large trees located on the side of his home, that prevented other floating houses from destroying his house. The home was left standing but was completely flooded. As a result of the water damage, the home had to be gutted. DOLTR had to put in new electrical, plumbing, heating and air, as well as, new cabinets and appliances. Over 1,200 volunteer hours were used in the repair of the Matherne’s home. Job well done, volunteers! The Matherne’s were very happy to be back in their house once again. His "thanks" were accompanied by a hug or a handshake for everyone. What a wonderful day!
